Performance: The Search by Garey Williams

I’m really excited to share this video this week. I was given the opportunity to film myself playing along to a song from the Hudson Music Playalong catalog. Hudson Music has made a nice selection of their playalongs available a la carte! It's a great way to test drive a new method book or build your own catalog of excellent, music-minus-drums tracks for practicing! Hudson shared my video on their Facebook page yesterday! Very cool!

This is “The Search” by Garey Williams from his book The Hi-Hat Foot (paid link). It’s a song by Garey’s band, Ecstasy In Numbers. I took a straight-forward approach to the original groove since it was so unique, and a nice challenge. I simplified it a little by dropping a few notes from the original kick pattern.

There are some excellent low-volume parts before each Chorus and the guitar solo has a nice build back into the main groove. I love that sort of vibe and had fun pulling out all my cymbal tricks.

For the ending, I abandoned the original groove for a straight backbeat feel and let my prog influences show with a few double kick flourishes and fast tom fills.

I really hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all of the support! This was such a cool opportunity and I hope I get to do more in the future!
